I know this is going to date me, but I couldn’t care less.
One of the pleasures of being a parent (and in my case, a step-parent) is that you can easily influence your children. In my case, one of the things I’ve opted to impress upon Kia is the value of fantasy/adventure novels…specifically, the series that I read in high school.
As such, she’s devoured all of David Eddings’ work (Belgariad, Mallorean, etc.), and is working her way through Raymond Feist’s Riftwar Saga. Feist’s stuff is super solid, and she’s totally into it – so we talk about the books fairly often. Tonight’s conversation somehow led to my mentioning the classic RPG Betrayal at Krondor.
BAK was released back in 1993, and I was the coolest geek on the block (as a freshman in HS), as I had a copy. We loved this game, and I was telling Kia how cool it was. A quick Google showed that BAK is now freeware, so we installed it…
..and spent the last three hours playing it.
The graphics are terrible by today’s standards, but the story still rocks. It reminds me of the old Sierra games (Quest For Glory, Police Quest, Kings’ Quest, etc.), and makes me nostalgic. Do any of you guys want to admit that you retain an infatuation with old school games?
Remember when games were all about the story/gameplay, because the graphics were just lame?
*sigh*

They don’t make games like they used to I say…:)

Eddings, I LOVE! Except for the new ones!!!! I was so angry I nearly got on a plane and flew to America, tracked him down, grabbed him, shook him and yelled “You can write better than this” and then slap him a few times.

Do I ever!
I recall the good old days of having to TYPE my actions.
“Pet unicorn”
“Look at picture”
“Give Pan flute”
Ahh, nostalgia. I still ache for them to resurect Gabriel Knight, 3 of them just wasn’t enough.

What was especially great about typing commands, was that every time you experimented with something questionable (like walking into the bathroom, and typing “take a dump”), the programmers had already thought of it…and included an appropriate response. The Sierra guys were famous for including hysterical references and responses to random things the player might type.
As fantastic as new games are, they don’t give you the same level of flexibility as the classics.
