Video iPods, PMPs, etc.

You can’t browse the web right now without happening upon some mention of Apple’s press conference tomorrow, and you certainly can’t read about the press conference without finding some talk about the rumors.

Everyone suspects that Mr. Jobs is going to announce an iPod Video iPod that plays video. Okay, that sounds cool.

But what I still don’t get, is who actually uses portable video players? I suppose that if you commute on mass-transit (subway, bus, train, etc.) for a good portion of each day, then it makes some sense. You have the time to watch videos on your iPod. But for the masses that drive to/from work, but are still able to listen to music while exercising, driving or working, what does a portable video player do for us?

Enlighten me, Blogosphereans. What would you use a portable video player for? Do you have one now? Would you buy a new iPod if it had the ability to play videos?

  1. I had heard something about an announcement for the 80 gig and that the video iPod was put on hold. Could be wrong, though.

A video iPod seems sketchy. I know I personally would have no use for it and most who would use that kind of thing are already using their PSP for both video and gaming. I’ll stick with my 60 gig, thanks.

  2. Mr.Jobs are his fellow eccentrics are all sick.
The motivation for the iPod Video Player is sheer competition with selfish interest.
Do they put the safety of the users into consideration?

  3. I would be surprised. Jobs has consistently stated that the idea of a portable video player is stupid — but you never know.

  4. How would an iPod video affect “the safety of the users”? That makes zero sense.

So apparently he did announce it. Paying for music videos? And TV shows? Seems kinda weak.

  5. iPod video might be a hit, just for the cool factor alone. Useful for train rides, plane trips, that sort of thing. I’m not sure you’d see commuters watching TV shows on them though.

One thing is for sure : the Apple rumour mill works exceptionally well.
