My Yahoo! Mail Beta 30-day Challenge

This is irony, man. My last post talked about how entrenched in the Google empire I’ve become, and my disappointment when Gmail gets hung up, as it tends to do (from time to time). Every single thing in that post is true – including the part where I said that Gmail has changed the way I handle e-mail.

Gmail has an achilles heel.

I hate to say it, but I recently discovered this massive problem with Gmail, and it’s prompted me to go back to webmail roots…with Yahoo! Mail. Before I get into that, let me get into the nuts and bolts of this issue I’ve got with Gmail.

One of the things that I blogged about before was my need to send e-mail from multiple e-mail accounts, and Gmail provides this feature. You can add numerous e-mail accounts, and when you’re sending messages, choose one of those accounts to send “from.”

Thus, for the last several months, I’ve been using Gmail for ALL of my accounts – personal and work…and it’s been fantastic. Until I discovered that Gmail messages, when sent “from” an account other than Gmail, show up like this in the recipient’s inbox (especially in Outlook):

From: myusername@gmail.com on behalf of selectedaccount@workdomain.com

Unfortunately, this is a major problem when it comes to professionalism, and it’s a problem for those of us who don’t necessarily want our Gmail addresses being shared directly with recipients. Stupidly, I’ve been using this feature for months without realizing that it was appearing this way.

Yahoo! Mail offers to the same functionality, but apparently, without the whole “on behalf of” nightmare. So I’m giving Yahoo! Mail Beta a try for 30 days. If the transition doesn’t have me sleepless at night, dreaming labels, this could be my solution.

I’m extremely disappointed that Google has decided to implement this “feature,” and that it’s not as readily obvious as it should be. If you’re using Gmail in this way, beware.

I’ll keep the updates coming on my transition…

Dear Gmail…how you taunt me

So I use Gmail. You probably do too…and if not, you’re probably using something comparable like Yahoo!

Gmail really changed the way that I approach e-mail. And at the expense of sounding like I’m a Google spokeshole, let me just say that I can’t imagine doing e-mail the way I used to it. I keep everything now, with labels and the whole nine yards; the day that I run out of space looms in my nightmares, but I’m only at 13% of my allotted capacity, so I’ll continue to defer the inevitable.

THAT BEING SAID…it’s extremely difficult for me to swallow when I get either of the following two messages:

We’re sorry, but Gmail is temporarily unavailable. We’re currently working to fix the problem — please try logging in to your account in a few minutes.

or…

Oops! We’re sorry, try again in a few seconds (paraphrased).

Google, with your Desktop software that helps me overload my brain at all hours, and your fantastic e-mail client that’s storing a massive quantity of fairly important information of mine – including the customer e-mail whose preview I see in Google Desktop, but can’t access because the server is down – you’ve got me by the proverbial short and curlies. It’s days like this that make me feel like I’m an uneducated stock market investor, and that I need to diversify.

The question is: where?

In some respects, it’s scary how much I’ve come to depend on the stability of Google, and I’m being actively reminded that such dependence on one entity is either really, really good…or really, really bad.

Google, Gmail, Google Desktop

Where I’ve Been..

Sometimes I learn lessons, and forget to implement my new learnings. It’s true.

One of those instances occurred last week, whereby all of my Joomla/Mambo installations fell victim to the malice of some dude on a small island off of Madagascar (at least, that’s where my server thinks he’s from). As best as I can tell, he was able to access my sites via the much-rumored PHP exploit of a few months back. Regardless, the complete ruining of my Friday, Saturday and Sunday was not his fault, but my own…because the newest security updates of Mambo and Joomla would have prevented such attacks from occurring.

So, we’re back up and running, I’ve re-learned my lesson, and am behaving like a decent part-time web administrator.

I’ll post details of the CMS fiasco in the next few days, for those who are interested.
