No kidding. We were at a classic Oaxaca restaurant here in Monterrey, and I saw “chapulines” on the menu. I was pretty sure they were grasshoppers, but wasn’t 100% convinced until a bowl of fried bugs came out. They were pretty tasty…once you forgot about what you were eating.

I found this gem (and thousands of similar articles) while trying to confirm that I had, in fact, just eaten grasshoppers:

Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most famous culinary destinations. The best way to sample all that it has to offer is by strolling through any of the area’s open-air marketplaces. For the adventurous, grab a small plastic bag or paper cone filled with chapulines: fried grasshoppers seasoned with salt, chili powder, and lime juice. Chapulines come in a variety of sizes depending on the season. Their crunchy texture and earthy flavor are surprisingly easy to swallow.
