I ate grasshoppers tonight…

ChapulinesNo kidding. We were at a classic Oaxaca restaurant here in Monterrey, and I saw “chapulines” on the menu. I was pretty sure they were grasshoppers, but wasn’t 100% convinced until a bowl of fried bugs came out. They were pretty tasty…once you forgot about what you were eating.

I found this gem (and thousands of similar articles) while trying to confirm that I had, in fact, just eaten grasshoppers:

Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most famous culinary destinations. The best way to sample all that it has to offer is by strolling through any of the area’s open-air marketplaces. For the adventurous, grab a small plastic bag or paper cone filled with chapulines: fried grasshoppers seasoned with salt, chili powder, and lime juice. Chapulines come in a variety of sizes depending on the season. Their crunchy texture and earthy flavor are surprisingly easy to swallow.

I’m going to Mexico…

It’s been quite a while since I’ve traveled. In fact, I haven’t left the country in almost five years; and now that I think about it, it’s no wonder I’m getting so excited about my trip to Mexico.

While my primary role on this trip is to act as interpreter/translator for my grandparents on their business trip, I’m eager to spend a few days in both Mexico City and Monterrey.

The intent is to spend a fair amount of time speaking into my voice recorder, and a little less time writing up my adventures here. Keep an eye on the Flickr account, as I’m also hell bent to dump that SD card at least once a day.

If you have any great ideas on things that I should be doing while down that way, drop me a line and let me know.

One question: if I can’t drink the tap water, and I can’t eat ice…what the hell am I going to do about coffee? Will the Marriott make its coffee with bottled water?
