I’m building a site for a woman who’s just finished publishing her first book. Since it’s just published, she’s light on testimonials…and given that I was in need of something to fill a module on the left side of a page, I created one for her.

She asked where I got the quote:

Just curious–where did you get the quote from Winston in Long Beach, CA?

So I answered honestly:

Winston is a guy who lives in apartment 2C, in that complex about two nanoblocks west of my cerebral cortex. He really wants to participate in your site, but if you don’t like his quote, he can leave.

Let’s see if he’s still around tomorrow.

I’m pleased to announce a few new things, in conjunction with my return to Turnipville.

The official roll out of Turnip Network – an association of my blogs, media and web affiliations.
The launch of Management Lounge – a collaborative site for managers and professionals of all industries.
Introduction of Martini Geek – a tech site geared toward the geek hobbyist, and those who love tech….but can’t do it full time.

As always, the downside of new development is that it takes time from maintenance. The development should be at a plateau, and we can get back to content generation. So thank you for your patience, and your e-mails.

Let’s look to the future, which includes much more blogging, much new material, and even some podcasts…

HD Plight – I need your help

So the plan here is to revolutionize Project Management at my new company.
Yep, you heard it here first.
So the first thing I told the company was that I was going to need a decent portable hard drive, so as to facilitate simpler/quicker/more effective synchronization between my laptop and my desktop…and they did well, I thought.

I was presented with a new LaCie Mobile drive, and I was stoked. LaCie usually rocks the party (rocks the partaaay).
Upon unwrapping, I noticed that the drive comes with two USB cables: one for data, and and one for power (only to be used in the rare event that it’s necessary). I plugged in the data one, and watched the light blink blinkin’ like P Diddy for three or four minutes. It didn’t mount.
Self, let’s give it a go.
Sure enough: my Powerbook doesn’t provide enough bus-side power to run the external drive without plugging in a second USB cable just for power. If you’ve got a 15″ Powerbook, you know that you have to native USB ports – one on each side of the machine. Using both of those ports for one short-cabled device turns your Powerbook into one of those lanyard-wearing, iPod Shuffle-using employees at the Apple store (read: strapped, and difficult to use).
This isn’t going to work. I need an external drive (50 GB or less) that will run on either USB power alone, or Firewire power alone – ON MY POWERBOOK. Help, Internet.
And for all of you PC laptop users who are chuckling to yourself, saying “they all work fine on mine…hehe,” don’t blame me when your computer melts down for refusing to follow the USB power specification.

What about alternative PM software? I’m well-acquainted with MS Project, but may have the need to switch…

Daddy Blogger

Today a buddy of mine posed the question I’ve been waiting for:

Now that you’ve got a new baby, are you going to become a “daddy blogger?”

I’m a huge fan of terms like “Mommy Blog” and “Daddy Blog,” because they’re so singularly exclusive. Ostensibly, if one posts on his/her blog about life with his/her kids, they’re a “Mommy/Daddy Blogger.” Now, I can hear the screams of objection: “There’s nothing wrong with that!”

I agree…there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m a “Daddy,” and I’ve got a blog – so in my eyes, that makes me a “Daddy Blogger.”

Turnipville has been, in its five year history, one of the most eclectic smorgasbords (how about THAT for hyperbole) that I’ve seen. I’ve shamelessly plugged my music, rambled about politics, sports and various tech stuff…but I’ve also been keen on mentioning things about my family.

That’s not going to change.

Turnipville is my little outlet on the web, and I talk about things that are important to me. Given that in the last two months, 9,000 of you have wandered this way (admittedly, some of you from blogexplosion.com), I must be doing something amusing.

Our newest little addition to the family is bringing all sorts of joy to my life, and you can count on me sharing some of it here…along with the other nuggets of truth that are hand-delivered by my Powerbook to your computer screen.

Just When I Begin To Think..

…that I’ve got a decent amount of experience in various web development segments, I check my e-mail. I’m subscribed (for whatever reason) to the alumni career mailing list for MIT. After I graduated, I figured “what the hell,” and I’ve been subscribed since.

Sure, I’ve got a MS from MIT…but I still couldn’t meet qualifications like these. It’s humbling, to say the least.

I just continue to justify it with self-observations like “I just do this for fun,” and “Sure, but could they do what I do?”

Recap

This has been one of the craziest couple of weeks in recent memory for me, and I owe you an explanation for my absence.

- Hurricane Katrina has to lead the list. What happened in New Orleans is an absolute tragedy, and that’s all that needs to be said. I’ve donated my $200, and continue to pray for the quick recovery of all those who are suffering. Let’s please stop politicizing the disaster.

- I’ve had an uncanny influx of web design work; three sites in the last two weeks is crazy.

- This week we submit our final drafts of a major claim project at my day job. Yeah, that’s all in addition to my normal day job.

- We’re starting to investigate options for new homes. With the baby due in a few weeks, we’re starting to feel the crunch for space. Man, I didn’t realize babies come with so much stuff.

- Judge Roberts: I don’t have the time to get into another one of my political pontifications, so I’ll drop it. But you could spend a week just staying abreast of the questions Senator Biden has asked the man.

- We had Chewy, our Cockapoo, shaved. He spent the long weekend with my mother while we vacationed in Big Bear, and he came home with three-quarters of the twigs in the county mangled in his fur. Now he’s shaved, and the cats don’t recognize him…so this place is a fiasco.

- I move furniture – all the time. Yep, we have a baby on the way.

Okay..enough. Blah.
