Turnip?

This question is pretty common. It’s so common, in fact, that I’ve addressed it since the first version of Turnipville back in 2000.

Ah, what the hell. I’ll even use the original explanation:

What’s with the nickname? Why the hell would anyone be called Turnip? Let me explain…

So we’re sitting in Professor Eda’s class, third class year. Parker and TJ are sitting on the far right side of the classroom, and I on the far left. Professor Eda passes around a sign-in sheet, where we put our name in the box corresponding to the desk we’re sitting in; a fairly simple procedure.

You’d think it’d be straightforward.

Put YOUR name in the box.

So the sheet is passed around, and finally gets to me. I look down, and notice that someone had taken the liberty of filling in my name. The only problem was that instead of reading “Tim Glinatsis,” it read “Timmy Turnip.”

You can imagine my shock.

You can also imagine my lack of surprise when I saw Parker and TJ smirking, and mouthing, “Hey, Turnip.”

You can similarly imagine my shock when the entire section began referring to me as Turnip on a regular basis…

Regardless, the nickname has stuck. If you ask Parker WHY he chose Turnip, he’ll say: “I dunno - it just sounds funny. Timmy Turnip. That’s why it’s funny. It has absolutely no meaning. Turnip. Hahahah.”

But I like to think there’s a bigger reason for being called Turnip…

This comes from an online book of name explanations:

Your first name of Turnip has given you the vision and foresight to be able to organize others and to hold positions of responsibilities with poise and self-confidence. This name creates an optimistic outlook on life and favourable conditions in your personal affairs. You have the ability to express your thoughts and ideas, and you are friendly, likeable, and generous. You enjoy fun, laughter and congenial association. This name also gives you an appreciation of art, music, drama, or any of the many forms of expression in the arts. Since you are quick and fluent in your expression, you have to guard against boastfulness or dominating a situation. You are likely a big eater, requiring heavy foods to satisfy your appetite. Overeating can affect the bloodstream, causing it to become overheated. In turn, skin problems could result. There could also be weaknesses in the generative organs.

There you have it.
